Frequently Asked Questions

Any specific questions can be emailed to bookmail@eddington-hook.co.uk. Alternatively you may call us on +44 (0)1892 839816 or fax +44 (0)1892 837272.

If you have a book on the website does that mean it is in stock?

Not necessarily. We always have Open University and Distance Learning set texts in stock and a good selection of the optional titles. For our other bookshops, we usually carry stock of the popular titles. For books from overseas publishers we try to keep copies in stock. If the book you order is temporarily out of stock, it means that we are expecting delivery very shortly, normally within 5 working days. If a book is not in stock, we will order it for you and will contact you by email with an expected delivery time. Occasionally books are reprinted or the publishers produce a new edition. We will notify you of the expected date which the publishers have given and record your order. As soon as the book arrives in our warehouse it will normally be despatched to within 24 hours. If you are unhappy with the length of time you may cancel at this point.

Can you deliver books to anywhere in the world?

Yes we can. The postage and packing charges will be different, so please choose the correct one for the area to which you wish the book to go. Please see Delivery for details of postage and packing. If you are unsure then just email us at bookmail@eddington-hook.co.uk. Alternatively you may call us on +44 (0)1892 839816 or fax +44 (0)1892 837272.

Similarly if you would like a book couriered to a particular destination, please contact us. We will then work out a competitively priced charge specific to your order, but will not despatch the books until you have agreed to the charge.

How long does it take to process my order?

Orders are normally processed the same working day that we receive them. If the complete order is in stock it will be despatched the next working day. Express orders received before 2.30pm are despatched the same working day.

Are my details secure?

If you are new to the Eddington Hook website, you might be wondering if your details are secure. We'd like to assure you now that shopping this way is as safe as shopping anywhere else, if not more so. We run a secure server software that encrypts all your personal information preventing it from being accessed or read by any third party.

Will anyone else get hold of my details?

Eddington Hook will not pass your details to any third party. Your order is important to us and we would not want to jeopardise our relationship by bombarding you with unnecessary unsolicited emails. We might occasionally contact you with news of your order, new developments or special offers, just to keep you informed.

Can I have a different delivery address for my order?

Yes, in fact as many of our parcels have to be signed for, we advise customers to use a different delivery address, especially if no one is likely to be at home during the day. This ensures that you receive your books on the first time delivery is attempted, and without the inconvenience of having to contact the depot to arrange another date for delivery. We can also put special delivery instructions on the parcel if necessary, for example: "Please leave with neighbour".

Can I cancel my order?

You may cancel your order at anytime before it is despatched to you by emailing bookmail@eddington-hook.co.uk.
Alternatively you may call us on +44 (0)1892 839816. or fax +44 (0)1892 837272. Please quote your order reference number.

How do I return a book?

Hopefully you will be pleased with the books you order from us. However occasionally a book may not be exactly what you hoped. You can return any book ordered within 30 days of purchase so long as it is in a resalable condition.

Please contact us first at bookmail@eddington-hook.co.uk so that we can send you the appropriate returns paperwork Alternatively you may call us on +44 (0)1892 839816 or fax +44 (0)1892 837272. Please quote your account number or invoice number.

Similarly if you receive a book that is damaged or is a faulty copy, we will be happy to replace it, but please contact us as above.

Are the books for OU and other distance learning courses the correct editions?

Yes, we work in close cooperation with the Open University, and other distance-learning providers to ensure that we only stock the correct editions. Just occasionally the correct edition may go out of print, is no longer available or a there is a new replacement edition. As soon as we receive any such information we inform the OU etc so that they can make arrangements to advise all students. But this is quite rare.

Why can the price be different from that in my course material?

We update our databases regularly and keep the OU and other distance-learning providers informed of price and any other changes. Unfortunately, your course materials may have been printed before the changes were notified to us.

What is your pricing policy?

Although we use databases, which are updated very regularly, book prices can be and are increased by publishers without prior notification.

If the price increase of a single book is within the following guidelines, we will despatch your order as normal:

£1.00 - £10.99 price increase up to 20%
£11.00 - £19.99 price increase up to 15%
£20 and over price increase up to 10%

But if it is above these amounts we will inform you by email and will only despatch your order once you have confirmed that you wish to receive it.

Just very occasionally, the price of a book may go down. It does not happen often but we have known it. In that situation, we will pass on the reduction to you.

Will I be charged the exact amount shown on my order form?

Yes in most cases. The exception would be if we have received a new delivery and the publishers had increased or reduced the price of any of your books. If you are an overseas customer it is also possible, if your books are particularly heavy or particularly light, that our quoted prices (which are based on average size paperbacks) will be significantly wrong. In this case we will email you to get your approval for any higher postage charge. If the charge is lower we will send without emailing you.

Do you offer discounts?

Yes. We offer a constantly changing range of discounts and special offers. You can visit our special offer page to see the latest offers. Institutional customers with substantial book requirements should contact us by email or phone for a quotation.
